For work whose documents cannot leave your computer
Lawyers, therapists, accountants, clinicians: you already know which of your files can never be uploaded to a service. This page does not tell you that GI JI satisfies any rule, standard or obligation you work under — we make no such claim, about any of them. What it does is describe exactly what the software does with your material, in enough mechanical detail that you can hold it against your own duties and your own advisers, and decide for yourself.
Where something else is the better answer — said first, on purpose
GI JI does not read scans. If your work arrives as scanned exhibits, scanned intake forms, or imaged records, GI JI has no OCR: it refuses a scan-only file rather than importing it empty. For a great deal of professional material that is disqualifying on its own, and you should know it in the first minute rather than the first hour.
It is one person on one computer. A Personal licence activates on one machine at a time. There is no shared practice library, no colleague access, no case-management integration. If your practice needs several people working one index, this is not that product.
We are a $79 desktop application, not a supplier relationship. If your engagement rules require a signed arrangement with a service provider, a named processor, or a contract your firm's counsel reviews, we do not offer that machinery. A tool that runs entirely on your own machine is a different kind of thing from a service, and whether that difference helps or hinders you is a question about your obligations, not about our software — so it is yours to answer, not ours.
What the software actually does with your material
Everything lives in a folder you can see. Your imported documents, the search index built from them, the questions you ask, the notes you save, and the backups all sit in the GI JI folder on your own disk. You can open that folder, copy it, move it to an encrypted volume, or delete it. There is no other copy anywhere because no other copy is ever made.
There is no account. No sign-up, no email, no password, no cloud library to log in to. Nothing about you exists on our side to be handed over, requested, or lost.
The interface serves only your own machine. GI JI shows its screens through a small local web server. Its configuration check accepts only 127.0.0.1, ::1 or localhost as a listen address and the server refuses to start on anything else, so it cannot be reached from another computer on your network.
Nothing is reported back to us. GI JI keeps some counters about its own performance — how often it fell back, how often it refused — in an ordinary file inside your GI JI folder. That file is never transmitted. There is no product analytics, no usage reporting, and no error reporting service.
The complete list of times it reaches the internet. One-time setup, to fetch the private local AI and the two models it uses. Licence activation, which contacts Freemius with what is needed to verify the licence and carries none of your documents. A website you yourself choose to import. And optional Connected AI, described next. That is the whole list; after setup, GI JI reads, indexes and answers with no connection at all.
Connected AI is off, optional, and shows you the packet. If you switch it on, it uses your own OpenAI API account and your own key, and that key is held only for the current session. Setting up a session key contacts OpenAI to list the models available to that account; it sends no document, excerpt, question, or saved note. Every content-bearing request afterwards shows you the exact packet that would leave and requires your one-time approval before it does. You read the outgoing text before it goes, every time.
Why the refusal matters more in your work than in most
A confident paragraph that is not in the file is worse than no paragraph at all when the file is the whole point. In Sources only, if GI JI cannot attach enough usable evidence from your own documents, it stops and says so, and no answer-writing call is made — there is no plausible draft sitting there to be trusted in a hurry. It refuses more often than a cloud tool does. That is the trade, and for this kind of work it is the right way round.
A citation is not a guarantee that an answer is correct. It shows you what the answer rested on so you can read it and judge. GI JI does not replace your professional judgment, and it is not legal, medical, financial, or compliance advice.
Judge it against your own duties
We have deliberately not named a regulation, a standard, or a professional rule anywhere on this page, and we have not said that GI JI meets one. Only you and your advisers can decide what your obligations require, and a vendor sentence claiming otherwise would be worth nothing to you. What we owe you is an accurate description of the mechanism, which is what is above — and the software itself, free for 20 documents, so you can check every sentence of it on your own machine before you pay anything.
The one-line version
If your documents are scanned, or several people need one library, this is not your tool and we would rather you knew now. If your material is text, stays on one machine, and must not be uploaded anywhere — GI JI runs on that machine, cites the passage, and refuses honestly, for $79 once.
